Bringing art to beautiful city of Lewes

November 16, 2017

I am writing to thank Dennis Forney for his very timely and thought-provoking article on outdoor public art. Two years ago, when Warren and Jane Ellan Golde, my husband Dennis and I drove to Holland, Mich., to attend the America in Bloom Symposium, an idea was born.

Like Dennis Forney, we too enjoyed the many sculptures in Holland. We also toured the Meijer Botanical Gardens in Grand Rapids, Mich., which displayed numerous outdoor statues.

Jane Ellan's idea of, "why can't Lewes" bring public art to our beautiful city and her vision to place outdoor public art throughout our beautiful city was formed. After two years, through tenacity, tireless effort and perseverance, that vision is finally becoming a reality. We owe a great debt of gratitude to both Jane Ellan and Warren for the many hours they have worked/volunteered to beautify Lewes.

And, thank you again Dennis Forney, for bringing to our citizens' attention the wonderful value and goodness of public art for all to enjoy. Right now, until the end of the year, Art in Bloom is holding a campaign to raise funds for its first public art project: three kinetic wind sculptures to be placed at the trailhead near the library. Anyone wishing to contribute to this fund may mail a check to Art in Bloom, P.O. Box 61, Lewes, DE 19958 or visit www.lewesinbloom.org and choose Art in Bloom to make a donation.
