Burdette: Common sense, honorable true to his word

August 26, 2016

My first meeting with Kevin Burdette was his introduction as our instructor to a class of newly registered Del Tech students trying to obtain our state of Delaware water operators license. His skills as an orator had me interested immediately in a course I really didn't want to take but he made it sound so darn interesting. During the next eight weeks he would not only instruct us on the basic requirements needed but took the time to show us how and why.

Part of this instruction that kept my interest was his vast knowledge and history of the local infrastructure associated with the water business. His 30-plus years in the water business gave him a distinct advantage in not only knowing the scientific side of water, but also the business side of water. I had a hard time with the math portion, but he would take the time and diagram example after example on the dry erase board until we got it. The remainder of the course was eight weeks with another instructor. Finally a test in Dover, and I passed the course.

My next correspondence with Kevin was me calling him for help in designing a hassle-free pump and plumbing system for our spray field irrigation system, part of our mobile home park sewer plant. We had problems with this system on a monthly basis. Kevin came in, took some measurements, calculated the volumes needed and specified all the components needed within one week. With Caswell Plumbing doing the install to his specifications we were up and running in no time. This June has been three years since the installation, and we've had not one problem with this system.

His knowledge of what it takes to get a job done is exemplary of the kind of commitment needed to be an ally in our business and any other. He will lead by example, not just talk when it comes to making a decision, based on the facts presented, and will be fair and just in forming an opinion in taking the right course to follow. This is exactly what Sussex County Council needs now and in the future.
