Burton deserves full support on buffers

June 22, 2018

I am in full support of Councilman I.G. Burton's recent proposal to the Sussex County Council to improve the current system for calculating building density permitted on a parcel of land.

In addition, Councilman Burton's proposal to at least double the current 20-foot buffers for new developments represents an essential measure to begin to address the pervasive pollution of Sussex's inland waterways. Although my wish would be for Sussex to adopt buffer ordinances comparable to the 100-foot buffers mandated in Kent and New Castle, I realize that Councilman Burton is dealing with key council members who prefer to turn a blind eye to the issue of Sussex's pervasive water pollution.

Councilman Burton deserves the full support of Sussex's residents for introducing these long overdue measures. It is mind-boggling that our elected officials have historically been unwilling to address the approximately 92 percent of waterways that are unfishable and approximately 86 percent of the waterways that are unswimmable. I urge all to contact their elected officials and make their voices heard.
