Cannonball runners roll around historic Lewes

Young and Dunn win overall titles

The Lewes Cannonball 5K is a great race because most of the runners say so after finishing on Third Street by the Lewes Historical Society Complex.

The weather had backed down a few notches after a bake oven weekend to breathable air on Sunday morning.

Jeff Young, 25, was the overall winner  in 17:56. Jeff’s dad Tim Young who runs most local races won the 55-59 age group in 23:40. Sheila Young ran in the female 50-54, good for seventh place in 31:33. Jeff and Tim cheered for his “mom”  as she crossed the finish line because they are smart “Young” men.

Susan Dunn, 39, was the overall women’s winner in 21:14. Robin Dunn, 50, placed 4th in the 50-54 group running 27:15.    

Jack Babin, 53, won the male masters in 20:34. Meryl Ludwig, 50, was the female masters winner in 21:48 while her daughter Lindsey Ludwig, 17, won her age group in 36:13.

Albert Norman, 17, ran 21:14 to capture the male 14-19.

Kameron Hartfield, 25, from Millsboro, who just moved to the area from Texas, was second overall in 18:38.

Barbara Skates, 54,  who arrived at the race from Waymart, Pa., north of Scranton, with her Harley riding buddies won her age group in 24:22 to the delight of the buddies who were kicking  it along the split-rail fence at Shipcarpenter Square.

Joe Link, 65, the Cape May Kid by way of West Catholic High in Philly, won the 65-69 male division in 23:39.  

Tim Abbott, 70, of Georgetown, a total freaky beast, ran 24:35 to win the 70 and over male race.
