Cape’s Lauren Carra, the player, is a coach

Vikings come back to beat Sussex Tech 40-37
February 13, 2017

Cape girls’ basketball coach Lauren Carra is a player. Just a few years ago, she was a starting forward at the University of Delaware on a team that featured Elena Delle Donne, perhaps the best technical player ever in the women’s game.

Carra, the player, became a coach, and she’s got game. With her team down 24-15 to a talented Sussex Tech squad Feb. 9, Carra made subtle adjustments at the half, and the Vikings ran a 13-2 number at the Ravens in the third quarter to lead 28-26 entering the final period.

Cape got home for a 40-37 win to improve its record to 11-7 on the season, guaranteeing a winning record.

“We used different combinations based on how our kids were playing and matching against their lineups, which had some different looks,” Carra said.

Freshman guard Dania Cannon led all scorers with 23 points, including 5-of-6 from the free throw line, where she was money in the fourth quarter. And Cannon spent some serious minutes on the fourth-quarter bench because “who knows why?” Except Carra, who is an unflinching decision maker.

Sydney Pedersen and Niyashja Mosley made crucial fourth-quarter plays to help deliver the victory.  Abby E’Nama was a force for Cape on the boards and on defense.

The Ravens were paced by inside players Janiya Stevens with 13 points and Kara Hignutt with six. The duo represented twin tower problems for Cape, but each spent many minutes on the bench.

Cape has games left at home versus Smyrna at 6:15 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 14, followed by a road game against Central at 6:15 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 16.

Sussex Tech beat St. Thomas More Feb. 11 48-34 to improve to 12-5 with three games remaining.
