Cape and Sussex Tech to meet in hockey final

Championship game set Nov. 18 in Newark

Cape Henlopen ran the roster at Polytech in the semifinal round of the Division I field hockey state tournament Nov. 14 at DE Turf, leading 3-0 at halftime, then closed out the Panthers with a dominating second half to win 4-0.

Lindsay Monigle scored at 10:57 in the game, then it was Cam Smith ringing the bell at 24:45 and 27:46. Alia Marshall scored the final goal at 58:57 of the second half.

Goalie Holly Remold of Polytech and Cape’s Lori Ferguson each had four saves in the game. 

Cape outshot the Panthers 8-6, with a 17-6 advantage in corners. 

Sussex Tech, the No. 8 seed in an eight-team field, defeated Dover in the other semifinal 1-0.

Kira Short scored five minutes into the game for Sussex Tech, while goalkeeper Grace Lee pitched a shutout.

Cape will play Sussex Tech at Rullo Stadium in Newark Saturday, Nov. 18, as part of the Division I and II state championship doubleheader. Times are still to be determined.The Ravens are in the show under the direction of first-year head coach Mia Paltrineri, while Cape tries to win its sixth state title in seven years.

“We want to be on the pitch at Rullo Stadium, which is the fastest surface in Delaware,” said Cape coach Kate Austin. “We are peaking right now, playing the best we have all season. We like a fast game.”

Delmar won the state championship last season, but before that, it was five in a row for Cape and two consecutive state titles for Sussex Tech ahead of that streak.
