Cape baseball comeback finishes Indians

Vikings score four in sixth to win
May 15, 2017

The Cape Henlopen baseball team had a relaxed and never-give-up attitude Friday, May 12, as the Vikings rallied in the sixth inning to defeat Indian River 4-3.

Down 2-0, Noah Piper led off the sixth inning with a triple. Austin Elliott walked and then stole second, so Cape had runners on second and third with no outs. Zach Savage then hit a two-run double in the gap to tie the game. David Erickson bunted for a hit that moved Savage to third, and both guys would eventually score to give the Vikings the four runs they needed to seal the victory.

“Noah’s triple just set us off,” said Cape coach Ben Evick. “Zack [Gelof] continued to throw very well through six innings, and David [Erickson] came in and shut the door in the seventh, taking the win on the mound.”

Erickson also went 2-for-3 from the plate.

Keeping the team’s emotions in check was a key to the Vikings’ victory.

“It was a good example of our guys sticking to the plan and keeping calm and making things happen,” said Evick. “We weren't trying to do too much offensively, and we hit some balls hard right at people in the early innings and were unable to score.”

Indian River’s Jacob Anderson was 1-for-3 and drove in a run for IR. Ulises Barrientos-Zamora pitched five strong innings for the Indians.

Cape (9-6) returns to action Tuesday, May 16, as the Vikings travel to Lake Forest to face the 2-13 Spartans. Game time is 4:15 p.m. They return home for Senior Night Thursday, May 18, to face Appoquinimink.
