Cape baseball falls to Sallies 2-0

Pitching duel allows just seven hits in game
April 10, 2017

Salesianum got two runs on three hits in the first inning of its April 8 game against the Vikings, and that was all they needed, as Sallies took a 2-0 victory over Cape in an epic pitching duel.

Cape starting pitcher Zack Gelof pitched six innings of four-hit baseball on Salesianum’s Eugene A. DelleDonne Memorial Field. After the first inning, Gelof shut down the Sals with 1-2-3 innings in the second, third, fourth and fifth. He finished the game with nine strikeouts. Three Ks came in the third inning.

“Both teams played a great game,” said Cape coach Ben Evick. “Zack [Gelof] had the most efficient pitched game of the season. He pitched great against Sallies’ Eugene Holler and Jack Fiala.”

Cape’s Austin Elliott, Zach Dale and Noah Piper had hits for the Vikings.

“It was very odd how fast the game went,” said Evick. “There were quite a few strikeouts.”

Cape will travel to Woodbridge Monday, April 10, then play host to Caesar Rodney Wednesday, April 12.
