April 13, 2018

The undefeated Cape baseball team went Garth Brooks at Sussex Central April 12, “Ropin’ The Wind” for 13 runs, including see-you-later-taters from Luke Johnson, Zack Gelof and Austin Elliott.

Pitcher David Erickson pitched all five innings for Cape, allowing just two hits and striking out 12.

Jake Gelof and Mason Fluharty each had a pair of hits for Cape. The Vikings improve to 7-0 and next play at Appoquinimink at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 14. The Jaguars, coached by Billy Cunningham, are 5-1.

Sussex Central lost its second consecutive game, dropping its record to 4-2.

The 7-0 start is the best for Cape in the decade since Websites4Sports started keeping records.

But the streak came to an end April 14, as the Vikings fell to Appoquinimink 5-4. Cape had beaten Appo the last two seasons, but lost to the Jaguars twice in 2015, including in the state championship game.

The Vikings took a 4-2 lead into the top of the fifth inning, but could not hold on, as the Appo Jaguars scored two in the fifth and one in the sixth.

Senior Austin Elliott pitched 4.1 innings, allowing four hits and four runs, while striking out six Appo batters. He also delivered a two-run homer in the first inning.

Zack and Jake Gelof and Timmy Vitella each had a hit for the Vikings.

Each team is 6-1 on the season. Cape hosts Salesianum Saturday, April 21, while Appo travels to St. Elizabeth’s Tuesday, April 17.
