Cape baseball got what they wanted by doing what they had to do. The Vikings dominated Tower Hill 10-0 over six innings at Chris Short Field May 27 in the opening round of the DIAA state tournament.

David Erickson won a tournament home game for the second year in a row, going five innings, allowing one hit while striking out 10.

“David has that compact delivery and just pounds the strike zone on both sides, and up and down,” said coach Ben Evick. “I was going to pull him after four, but I let him go one more inning. We have three quality starters with David, Zack Gelof and Austin Elliott, so we’re in pretty solid shape.”

Cape will play the tournament’s top seed Conrad (16-2) at Frawley Stadium at 4 p.m., Tuesday, May 30. The Red Wolves beat Polytech 10-4 to advance to the quarterfinals. The Conrad School of Science is now in the Diamond State Conference.

Tommy Heffernan came in to pitch the sixth inning then chased home two runs in the bottom of the frame with a walk-off slaughter rule single to right centerfield.

Elliott had a double, triple and four RBIs in the game. Connor Thompson was 3-for-3, with a walk and three runs scored.

Dwayne Harmon had the catch of the game, racing backward from second base and snagging a humpback liner hit over his head that was ticketed for extra bases.
