The Cape Henlopen boys’ lacrosse squad was feeling their oats May 15, as the Vikings finished regular-season play with a 14-10 victory over Wilmington Friends.

Luke D’Ambrogi led the Vikings with six goals in the win. Jack Dennis, Gabe Best  and JP Heid added two each, while Blake Gipko and Timmy Kelley cranked one apiece into the Friends’ twine. D’Ambrogi and Andre Currie assisted on Cape scores.

Friends attack Eric Pincus scored three times to lead the Quakers.

Cape outshot the Quakers 37-24. Friends goalie Lyle Knudsen made 10 saves, while Cape keepers Sean Griffith and Baxter Travers teamed for five.

“I thought we played well in spurts in the first half,” said Cape coach Mark D’Ambrogi. “But we weren’t consistent. When the second half started, we played good, consistent lacrosse, especially in the fourth quarter.”

Cape went into the halftime break ahead 5-3 and outscored Friends 9-7 in the final two periods.

“We took care of the ball, found the open man, and we were generally smarter with the ball, which led to a lot of opportunities for us,” D’Ambrogi said. “We gave up two goals late in quarters, which is something you never want to happen, and both were off our mistakes. Those are things that we are going to work on in practice.”

Cape will take on Milford Friday, May 18, for the Henlopen Conference Championship. The game will be played at the DE Turf Sports Complex. Game time is 7 p.m.
