The Cape boys’ lacrosse team took their first step into the DIAA postseason playoffs with a dominating 16-4 win over St. Andrew’s May 23 at Legends Stadium.

“We played well from the beginning of the game and maintained our intensity,” said Cape coach Mark D’Ambrogi. “The guys did a good job of putting their shots on cage and, as result, jumped out to a lead that we were able to extend.”

The Vikings took 37 shots on the Cardinals’ cage.

Jake Trimmer led the Vikings with five goals in the game. Ethan Ghabra, Brock Maloomian, Ryan Diacont and Luke D'Ambrogi each scored twice for the Vikings. Erik-Stephane Stancofski, Holden Kammerer and Patrick Monigle each hit the twine for one goal.

Luke D’Ambrogi made four assists while Greg Boyce tallied three; Liam Zolper and Jake Brown had two helpers while Stancofski and Matt Prestipino each had one.

“Thirteen of our 16 goals were assisted,” coach D’Ambrogi said. “That’s what we want to see.”

“We did a great job with the face-offs,” said senior Brock Maloomian. “I think a big difference is that when we got possession, we held onto the ball and got good shots.”

“We shared the ball really well,” said senior midfielder Evan Gehman. “And we really controlled the ground balls in the middle of the field.”

The Vikings defense played with the passion that a coach likes to see.

“Defensively, we did a good job of staying at home and playing good foot-to-foot defense. Brendan Kane made some good saves early, and we turned defense into offense with some good fast break goals,” said D’Ambrogi.

Kane stopped 10 Cardinals shots.

The Vikings are set to play Archmere in the quarterfinals Saturday, May 27.

“Hopefully, we can continue to get contributions from so many guys,” said D’Ambrogi.
