Cape boys’ lacrosse host chilly play day

Defense looks good against stiff competition
March 14, 2017

The Cape Henlopen boys’ lacrosse program held its annual play day March 11, hosting some of the top teams in the region. The weather may have been cold, cold, cold, but the competition was hot, hot, hot on the turf of Legends Stadium.

Teams taking part during the day were Malvern Prep, Garnet Valley and Penncrest from Pennsylvania, Mt. St. Joseph from Maryland and Ridgewood from New Jersey. Each team is known for their championship programs. The Vikings played Penncrest, Garnet Valley and Ridgewood.

“I don’t think our day started out well,” said head coach Mark D’Ambrogi of the first game with Penncrest. “We weren’t used to playing such tough competition so far. We did gradually get better as the day went along.”

The Vikings held their own against a tough Garnet Valley squad in the second game.

“We eventually got some good offense going and started getting better shots,” D’Ambrogi said. “We even dictated play on offense for quite a bit of the games.”

The Vikings were up on New Jersey powerhouse Ridgewood throughout the first half.

“Defensively, we are ahead of where we are on offense,” said D’Ambrogi. “Our defense is more experienced and helps our offense out creating plays.”

The long poles proved to be offensive-minded as they tallied a few goals on the day.

The Vikings, the 2016 Henlopen Conference champs, look to improve on their 8-6 record of last season and have scheduled Maryland lacrosse powers Worcester Prep and Parkside, and will travel to Ocean City, N.J., to face the Red Raiders.

The Vikings will open their regular season Wednesday, March 22, at Dover.
