Cape district students take part in Jump Rope for Heart

March 18, 2016

Shields Elementary School has been celebrating the popular Jump Rope for the Heart activities for the past month and has raised more than $4,000 for the American Heart Association. Students learn about how their hearts work, how to take care of their hearts and how to keep them healthy. Students also learn how to take their heart rate and what the difference is between resting and max heart rates.

The students at Milton Elementary School also teamed up with the American Heart Association to help fight heart disease.

During the week of Feb. 22, students in kindergarten through fifth grades participated in the program and raised $3,500! The schools are raising heart health awareness by teaching students about how to keep their hearts and bodies healthy.

Rehoboth Elementary School also participates in the program as well.

Track meets around the corner

The high school track competition season is approaching quickly, as the Vikings will host the Golden Knights of Sussex Central Tuesday, March 22, at 3:30 p.m. The boys of Sussex Central are coached by Jen Cawthern and assisted by Wes Townsend and Derek Shockro. Cawthern and Shockro coach with the Seashore Striders youth team in the fall cross country season. Nate Irvin leads the Central girls. Matt Lindell and George Pepper lead the Vikings.

Sussex Tech will travel to Caesar Rodney for a tough opener in Camden. The Ravens are led by first-year head coach Dontez Collins and assisted by longtime coaches Lou Nicoletti and Marty Cross as well as Shaila Collins and Deangelo Eley. All high school meets will begin at 3:30 p.m.

On the middle school level, the Beacon Middle School team will host a huge quad meet to kick off the season Thursday, March 24, beginning at 4 p.m. I coach the Beacon team, while Kenny Riedel leads Mariner. Teams from Georgetown Middle, Millsboro Middle and Mariner Middle will invade Legends Stadium, with 300 middle school athletes running, jumping and throwing over 13 events. Any adult interested in helping out in the meet, please contact me at tim@seashorestrider.com.

How to Keep Your Heart Healthy

By Shelby Manlove, Shields Elementary School third-grader

Do you know how to keep your heart healthy? I think I have a few suggestions for you. To keep your heart healthy, you need to get good sleep, eat and drink as healthy as possible, and get plenty of exercise.

One way you can keep your heart healthy is to stay on a good sleep schedule. You can do that by not staying up too late and try to wake up at the same time every day. This means not too many slumber parties and record The Amazing Race to watch during the day!

Another way you can keep your heart healthy is to eat and drink well. You can do that by eating healthy foods like vegetables, fruits, and always a main course. You should not eat much junky food because it is not good for your body or your heart. Try to stay away from salty foods that are not good for your heart. Also, you want to be drinking all day long because you do not want to get dehydrated. And the best thing to drink is water.

The last way you can keep your heart healthy is to get plenty of exercise. You can do that by playing sports or just being active. For example, you can run around the house two times every day. You are not getting any exercise by laying on the couch watching TV or playing on devices all day. You want to be up and moving all day long.

To conclude, the most important ways to have a healthy heart are through good sleep, a healthy diet, and lots of exercise. I hope you take my advice to heart!
