Cape falls 18-5 to Sussex Tech in Collick’s last game

Sussex Tech scored 18 unanswered points in the second half on a frigid night Nov. 10 to earn an 18-5 win over Cape Henlopen. The Ravens closed out the season at 4-6 while sending coach Bill Collick to Grotto Grand Slam and retirement as the Vikings finished 3-7 for the season.

Collick has retired from Delaware State University, Sussex Tech and now Cape, after beginning his coaching career in 1975 as a Cape assistant.

Sussex Tech was tackled for a safety on the last play of the first half a few plays after a 90-yard touchdown run was called back for a holding penalty. Cape’s Hunter Simmons had kicked a 32-yard field goal in the first quarter.

But the wind chill warning flags were flying in the face of Cape Henlopen. Five is two scores but less than a touchdown worth six. Cape allowed Michael Norsworthy to go 90 yards, holding or not, and it just seemed careless. Most important, Ben Ashby was sidelined with an ACL injury, Zach Dale appeared to be playing on one leg, and quarterback Sam Jones left the game in the first quarter with a knee injury.

Dale went to quarterback, which meant he couldn’t throw the ball to himself, and Ashby couldn’t bail out the offense on jet sweep, so the Ravens concentrated on stopping Kolbi Wright between the tackles.

Cape was swarmed along the line of scrimmage to open the second half, but a booming punt by Dale pinned the Ravens inside their own 10-yard line. The Ravens had not scored more than two touchdowns in any of their six losses. But then the offense went off, running right at Cape and scoring three unanswered touchdowns on runs of 62 and 10 yards by Ja’ron Hunt-Fletcher sandwiching a 2-yard run by Michael Norsworthy.

The Ravens graduate 19 seniors, while Cape will say goodbye to 13.

Notes: St. Georges football coach JD Maull retired a second time after Saturday’s 44-6 win over Delcastle to close out the season 4-6. Coach Maull, who lives in Lewes and is a disciple of coach George Glenn, is being encouraged by friends to apply for the Cape football job, while coach Maull has also encouraged them to take a significant pay cut in their careers.
