Cape finishes regular season as two golfers qualify for states

May 27, 2016

The Cape Henlopen High School ended its 2016 match season May 18 with an up and down performance against Polytech, losing 185 to 190 at Rehoboth Beach Country Club.

The down part was the close but not quite loss. That brought the Vikings' season record to 8-8 overall and 7-6 in the Henlopen Conference. The team also placed 25th out of 51 varsity golf squads statewide, out of the running for the upcoming state high school tournament, held May 31-June 1 at RBCC.

The up part was that 190 score against the Kent County school was the Vikings' best performance of the season.

Junior Matt Zehner won medalist honors with his 4-over par on the front nine. This was the 12th time Zehner was top scorer in matches this season, and he also qualified for the state tourney in the individual category.

Senior Jack Ashby shot a 46 for second spot among the Vikings, with sophomore Mike Bollig's 50 in the third position. Ninth-graders Saxon Kalb and Dane Palmer both posted 54s, tying for the final fourth score against Polytech.

The 18-hole Henlopen Conference Tournament took place May 24 at Cripple Creek Country Club in Ocean View. Zehner tied for sixth place overall with an 84. Ashby shot a 93, and also qualified for the states.

Bollig and Palmer tied each other with 99s, good for third and fourth spot for the Vikings. The team total of 375 put Cape in fifth place for the Conference Tournament.

Head coach Claudio Smarrelli complimented his very young team’s season, which was for most their first exposure to golf. "Personally, along with my assistant coaches Sean Toner and Samantha Purple, I think these youngsters did a great job, along with experienced incoming late players' help from Jack Ashby and transfer Mike Bollig," he said. "Zehner plays well with the big boys. Next year he will be a senior. Along with this year's freshmen, 2016-17 should be a strong team, with experience and depth to face the Henlopen Conference."

In the Cape Gazette’s online edition of this column, and for many years in the print version, there has been a reference to my handicap stroke allocation service, HoleByHole.com, along with my email address, fschranck@holebyhole.com.

There are some changes to announce.

HoleByHole.com has been completely updated, and the allocation service is no longer being offered. Instead, the website features every golf column that has ever appeared in the pages of this fine publication, back to Jan. 1, 1999. Over 200 golf book reviews can also be found there, readily searchable by author or title. For those who remember the old website, the change in its appearance is startling. On the other hand, it began in 1997, so in that respect it was a classic example of web design from way back then. Much has changed.

Teresa Rodriguez, one of the Cape Gazette's fine design and production staffers, created the new logo for Hole By Hole. Nate Bradshaw and the rest of the gang at Technogoober handled the transition to a new website design and hosting arrangement, enabling me to go local. I'm very pleased with their handiwork.

If you have ever had your name appear in one of my columns, you can find it again with the site's search feature. You can also continue to send me your golf news at fschranck@holebyhole.com.

Take a look around and let me know what you think.
