Cape football dominates in final scrimmage against DMA

Travels across bay to Cape May Sept. 9

A week made all the difference for the Cape Henlopen football team, according to head coach Bill Collick, as the squad moves closer to next week’s game across the Delaware Bay with Lower Cape May High School.

“After last week’s scrimmage with Middletown, this is a direction we wanted to go,” said the veteran coach after the Vikings dominated all aspects of a scrimmage versus Delaware Military Academy Sept. 1.

“The kids did a great job,” he continued. “They redeemed themselves after coming out of summer camp and playing poorly against Middletown.”

DMA has won 17 games over the last two years, and Collick had praise for his team’s effort against a quality opponent.

“We did away with simple problems,” he said. “We ran and concentrated on basic plays like the sweep, cross block, trap, and only threw the ball a few times. If you don’t need to pass, why do it? We just executed the base things.”

A welcome bonus in the scrimmage was the addition of Kolbi Wright and Damarcus Perry, who didn’t participate in the Middletown scrimmage. Wright carried groups of Seahawks defensive players to gain more than 150 yards rushing, and Perry led a tenacious defense against DMA.

Collick also gave kudos to the seniors, as they led the squad on the turf of Legends Stadium.

“I can’t say enough about the leadership of seniors like Aarin [Burton], Ben [Ashby], Zach [Dale], Jacob [Osborne], Kolbi [Wright], Damarcus [Perry] and the other veterans,” Collick said. ”I’m very happy with our performance.”

But the veteran head coach knows his team will have to play hard against their cross-bay rival.

“This is one of the better Cape May teams I’ve seen,” said Collick. “It’s the best Cape May team I’ve seen since the team that beat us 25-3 in 2010. We are going to have to execute good football to beat them.”

Cape will take on the Caper Tigers at 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 9, in Cape May, N.J.
