Cape football scrimmages Friday night, back to work Saturday morning

August 29, 2016

Cape football was in the the film room early Saturday morning, Aug. 27, then on the practice field for a two-hour practice. This regimen followed a Friday night too-hot-for-prime time scrimmage at Middletown versus the Cavaliers and Lake Forest.

The quick turnaround is usually an indication that the coaching staff is unhappy.

“Not at all,” said coach Bill Collick on Sunday evening. “I’d rate us a 7 on a 10-point scale in terms of how well we played. We just have to get our personnel right. We have moved some players while others are stepping up. The job of the coaches is to find the right groupings. Middletown ran the fast break spread offense like Smyrna, while Lake always has those hard and quick running backs.”

Collick said that overall he thinks his team has better personnel than last year.

“Quarterback Dylan Adams has a year under his belt. Kolbi Wright is solid on both sides of the ball and so is Rasheed Woods. And we have to get Ben Ashby going to the outside. Freshman Jo Jo Kirby has stepped in to play great at defensive back, and he has a super winning attitude. Zack Dale has been great wherever we put him. Not sure if he’ll stay at wideout or move to tight end, and on defense he can play outside or inside backer, and he’s our punter.”

Cape will scrimmage Milford at home Thursday, Sept. 1, at 5 p.m.

The Vikings open the season Saturday, Sept. 10 at 1 p.m., hosting Cape May Regional High School of New Jersey.

The Vikings play at Oakdale High School (Md.) Friday, Sept. 16.
