Cape football set to collide with Middletown and Lake Forest

August 24, 2016

The first three days of football practice are no pads and no contact. After that, it’s full speed ahead. To quote the late Vince Lombardi, “Football is not a contact sport, it’s a collision sport - dancing is a contact sport.”

The ones (football talk) and the guys who play both sides of the football each got 40 plays in a 10-on-10 scrimmage first versus McKean and then Delaware Military Academy.

The Highlanders of McKean were 3-7 last season, including losing five of the last six ball games. Delaware Military Academy made the Division II state tournament after posting a 9-1 regular-season record and lost to Woodbridge 12-7 in the opening round.

The Vikings are coming off a 5-4 campaign, which included state champion Smyrna hanging a crooked number 60-19 win last November.

Cape graduated 14 seniors off last year’s squad.

“You know we’re looking for hitters and players who get after it at this stage,” said coach Bill Collick after it appeared Cape got the better of the Highlanders then the Seahawks. “We will have a good team, but it’s a tough 10-game schedule we’re facing.”

Cape returns Dylan Adams at quarterback and what looks to be a starting backfield of Kolbi Wright, Rasheed Woods and Ben Ashby.

All three backs ran well in the scrimmage - Wright was a beast - and Adams hit Zack Dale full stride with a touchdown pass versus McKean. Rasheed Woods out of the backfield into the passing game proved elusive after catching the football.

Cape will travel to Middletown Friday, Aug. 26, to scrimmage the Cavaliers and the Lake Forest Spartans. Scrimmage time is 6 p.m. and it is open to the public.
