Cape girls’ basketball runs past Dover 61-46

Vikings understaffed but not overplayed
February 16, 2018

Even though the Vikings were without two starters, the seven remaining players put up 61 points on the Dover scoreboard and took their ninth win of the season back home to Cape in what fans were calling “a really physical game.”

Dania Cannon led the Lady Vikings with 21 points, while Mel McCloy and Niya Mosley finished with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

The Vikings started out quickly, scoring the first 12 points of the game, and finished the first quarter ahead 18-8. That’s when the Lady Senators recovered and applied the pressure via a full-court press that had the Vikings turning the ball over and giving up 12 in the second quarter. The teams traded baskets in the third, but the fourth belonged to the Vikings.

Even with three players in foul trouble, Cape adapted, adjusted and enforced pressure of their own, running past and racking up the points to outscore their Northern Division rival 25-14 and garner the win.

“It's been the tale of two different teams all season,” said Cape coach Lauren Carra. “Tuesday night against Dover we saw the best version of us. We were running the floor, hitting the open man, crashing the glass, and everyone was hustling. Every player who was on the floor played their role and played the way we are capable of playing. They’re fun to watch when they’re playing at that level.”

The Vikings will travel to St. Georges Tech Friday, Feb. 16, and close out the regular season Tuesday, Feb. 20, at home against Laurel.
