Cape girls’ basketball team ends season at Sanford

Carra looks to next season
March 3, 2017

The Cape Henlopen girls’ basketball team ended its season at Sanford March 2, with a performance the Vikings wish they could forget, as they fell 57-23, committing 42 turnovers in the contest.

Sydney Pedersen and Alexis Watkins each scored six points in the Vikings’ loss. Alia Marshall chipped in four. Carly Truitt hit for three, while Abby E’Nama and Nya Mosley added two each.

Cape ends the season with a 13-9 record.

“We got a little frantic under Sanford’s pressure,” said sophomore guard Alia Marshall. “We had a lot of turnovers that they converted into points. But we’ve had a really successful season. We made one more step in the playoffs than we did last season.”

“A lot of positives can be taken out of this season and built upon if the girls are willing to put the work in and continue to develop in the off season,” said Cape coach Lauren Carra. “We had a lot of impressive wins this season that showed the level this team is capable of playing at. There should be no lack of motivation for this group in the off season after a loss like we had to Sanford.”

Sanford defeated Conrad 53-50 in the DIAA quarterfinal March 4 and will face Ursuline Wednesday, March 8, at 8 p.m.

In other girls’ basketball action, Sussex Central ended its season at Caravel Academy, falling 66-39 in the second round. They defeated St. Thomas More 50-40 in the opening round.

After a bye in the first round, Sussex Tech defeated Delaware Military Academy 45-35 in the second, but fell to Ursuline in the quarterfinals 55-27 to end the Ravens’ season at 16-6.
