Cape girls’ lacrosse ready to put rep on the line

Vikings seek 100th straight Delaware win March 22
March 21, 2017

Ursuline Academy is an all-girls school coming off a winter sports season where they won state championships in swimming and basketball. The Raiders lacrosse team has athletes who know how to compete, and they are well coached by Feffie Barnhill, Lindsay Henzes and Gary Lyons.

At Champions Stadium March 18, in the second scrimmage of the day for both Cape and Ursuline, the first 22 minutes was a back-and-forth 3-3 score. Cape has won 99 straight games against Delaware opponents. This was not a game; it was more of a “check it out, check it out.” And before the lyric could be completed, Cape ran 10 goals in all different ways, using different people.

But make no mistake, Ursuline looked like a Final Four-caliber squad, an athletically talented team who will be a tough out for anyone in Delaware.

“We looked much better today than last weekend,” said first-year coach Lindsey Eichner. “We’re finally getting everybody back and healthy. Cailey [Thornburg] and Chloe [Schaeffer] were back and looked great, and we had others contributing on the offensive end. We have speed in the midfield, and we will see who drops back to play defense and who moves up to play more offense. And our two goalies, Izzy [Cryne] and Vienna [Iacona] both played well today.”

The Vikings played Garrison Forest of the powerful IAAM-A conference in Maryland and had a great scrimmage, their best of the preseason. Garrison Forest is already credited with a 10-8 win over Saint Mary’s, the only team to beat Cape last season.

The Vikings will open play at 6:15 p.m., Wednesday, March 22, hosting Dover. They will host Parkside (Md.) at 6:15 p.m., Friday, March 24.
