Cape girls’ lacrosse surges past Polytech 14-4

April 28, 2017

A top-tier matchup in girls’ lacrosse April 27 at Champions Stadium featured Cape Henlopen versus Polytech. The two teams met in the state finals in 2015 and 2016.

The game was close, 3-1, well into the the action, but deep in the second half Cape led 14-2, having gone on an 11-1 scoring surge.

“We are a second-half team,” said coach Jenna Burkhart, who along with Leigh Rupar is running the show until coach Lindsey Eichner comes off maternity leave just in time for the playoffs.

“We coach like the girls play,” Rupar said. “Every player brings a different skill set to the team. We were missing three frontline players tonight, but everyone here can play, the same as we can all coach.”

Cape was led in scoring by Lindsay Monigle’s four goals. Scoring two goals each were Katie Klabe, Alia Marshall, Eddy Shoop and Chloe Schaeffer. The Vikings got single goals from Victoria Lockwood and Kaylie Truitt.

Schaeffer had three assists, while Marshall contributed two.

Izzy Cryne was credited with six saves, while Shannon Stephan of Polytech turned away 11 shots.

Polytech goals came from Cam Dennis (2), Madi McKay and Tara Bond.

Cape (8-2) will play at Caesar Rodney Wednesday, May 3, while Polytech (5-2) hosts Delaware Military Friday, April 28.
