Cape girls’ lax beats Dover 19-0 to extend Delaware streak to 100

March 23, 2017

A hundred straight wins over eight years against Delaware opponents blew across Champions Stadium and out to sea March 22, as the girls’ lacrosse machine of Cape Henlopen went polar vortex on visiting Dover to win 19-0 in the season opener.

The 2017 campaign has commenced, and Zen Master P.J. Kesmodel has retired, yielding his system of spread offenses, multiple defenses and a stable of talent to coach Lindsay Eichner, who is assisted by Jenna Burkhart, Debbie Windett, Leigh Rupar and Bruce Leibu. Eichner will soon step off for six weeks of maternity leave with Burkhart steering the ship in her absence.

The scoring parade in the running-clock game was paced by Cailey Thornburg with five goals, Chloe Schaeffer and Lindsey Monigle with four, Eddy Shoop with two, and single goals from Korrine Lemaire, Victoria Lockwood, Alia Marshall and Anna Stancofski.

Schaeffer, Lemaire, Monigle and Shoop were each credited with two assists, while Thornburg contributed one. Eleven of Cape’s 19 goals were scored by underclassmen, holding true to the formula to always have more firepower in reserve than you will lose to graduation.

“The weather was miserable; we dropped a lot of passes, and ground balls were hard to pick up,” Eichner said. “But we played hard, and the nine assists point to the unselfishness and depth of this team.”

The Vikings’ last loss to a Delaware team was a 13-12 contest at St. Andrew’s May 2, 2009. The Vikings did beat the Saints 11-7 May 21 for their first of eight straight state championships. Cape is 24-0 in state tournament games since that improbable streak commenced.

Cape is solid and athletic across the backline of defense, with all-state players Annie Judge and Jody Boyer to go along with all-state swimmers Sarah Hyde and Sarah Rambo.

Izzy Cryne, a lefty, and Vienna Iacona, a never-stay-at-home goalie, take care of the net-minding for Cape.

The Vikings won the JV game 18-0. Goal scorers were Talbot Buck with five, Jillian Seker with four, Reilly Spinelli, Lola Messick and Christina Benson with two apiece, and Jackie Cannon with one.

Benson had three assists, while Messick added two and Meredith Lockwood had one.

Vienna Iacona and Maci Silicato split the goaltending duties.

Cape will host Parkside (Md.), Friday, May 24, at 6:15 p.m., then play at Indian River Wednesday, March 29, and host Worcester Prep (Md.) Friday, March 31.

Note: Sussex Tech, under first-year coach Dean Johnson, won its opening game of the season by beating Smyrna 12-10. Goals were scored by Morgan Johnson with five, Kathryn Giles with three, and Victoria Dalton and Bridget Johnson with two each. Tabitha Harris was in goal for the Ravens.
