The Cape girls’ lacrosse team has enjoyed a 7-2 advantage over Worcester Prep over the last nine years, with a cumulative goal differential of plus 14. The Vikings ran the clock at Worcester April 21, taking a 12-3 lead into halftime, then blowing it out for a 19-3 win. That was more plus goals, 16, than Cape had earned the previous nine years.

Cape improved to 8-0 with the win, while Worcester dropped to 6-2.

Each program currently boasts seven players competing in Division I collegiate lacrosse. The Mallards have Sophie Brennan, Meg Lingo and Regan Lingo playing at Furman; Molly Soulé and Leigh Lingo at Virginia Tech; Kristin Schriver at Winthrop; and Lilly Dinardo at Virginia. Cape’s seven players on D1 teams include: Taylor Gooch and Lizzie Frederick at Temple; Kat Judge, Allie Yeager and Katie Klabe at Winthrop; and Izzy Cryne and Cailey Thornburg at Mercer.

“We held Alia [Marshall] back this game because of a tender ankle, although she did play some attack in the final minutes,” said coach Lindsey Eichner of her leading scorer. “I know Worcester graduated some good people, but so did we. We’re at the halfway point in the season, and we’re looking for good game. Beating a 6-1 Worcester team by a big score doesn’t mean much, as we have South River, 9-1 coming to Cape on Tuesday. Hopefully our team will be ready and that will be a good game.”

Cape’s goal scoring was paced by Lindsay Monigle with five; Katie Frederick, Mallory Jones and Meredith Lockwood with three each; Sawyer Walker with two; and Lola Messick, Emily Monigle and Victoria Lockwood with one each.

Gracie Gardner scored twice for the Mallards, while Madison Vanorden hit the twine once.

Vienna Iacona had six saves and Vivian Lee had 1 for Cape. Sophia Bundonick had 12 saves for the Mallards.

Cape’s JV led at Worcester 5-0 at halftime, but the Mallards got it going in the second half, outscoring the Vikings 7-2 for a three-minute overtime, in which neither team could score. The game ended in a 7-7 tie.

JV goal scorers were Sky Dunmyer and Riley Keen with two apiece, and Caroline Maull, Alex Best and Lindsay Rambo with single goals.

Maddie Shanahan tallied four and Hailey Meritt scored thrice for the Mallards.
