Cape girls basketball defeats Central 53-43

Shuttleworth returns to court with 16 points
January 16, 2017

Cape junior Logan Shuttleworth returned to the Cape hardwood in the second quarter Jan. 12 with a powerful 16-point performance, 12 of which came in the fourth quarter, and helped spark a 53-43 upset of Sussex Central (7-3). Shuttleworth has been out of action with a knee injury since the Dec. 6 win over Polytech. Central had only lost to perennial powerhouses St. Elizabeth and Caesar Rodney. Cape moved to 6-4 on the season.

“We were so excited to play Central since [they] ended our season last year in the tournament,” said Shuttleworth. “We were so amped to play them.”

Although she was a vocal leader on the bench, Shuttleworth was happy to be back in the lineup.

“I’m just raging with joy,” she said. “I’m so happy to be back out there helping my team. It’s been so hard watching from the bench.”

“It was really great to have Logan back,” said Cape coach Lauren Carra. “She played really well.”

Freshman guard Dania Cannon led all scorers with 18 points.

“Dania played really well, especially in the first half,” said Carra. “She did what she had to do in this game.”

Senior center Abby E’Nama had 10 blocks for the Vikings.

“Abby was huge defensively for us tonight,” said Carra. “She played a huge role down low for us in the triangle and two. We knew we were going to need her in the back line if they went inside. Alia [Marshall] played great defense, locked down Raeonna Stratton in the game.”

Marshall also added seven points in the win.

The Vikings outscored the Knights by 10, but they were still plagued by turnovers in the game.

“It’s a simple decision between a bounce pass and a chest pass,” Carra said. “But they are taking big steps in the right direction.”

Cape went into the halftime break up 25-19, then outscored the Knights 28-24 in the second half to finish the game.

Cape returns to the Cape gymnasium Tuesday, Jan. 17, with a game against the Ravens of St. Thomas More.
