Cape girls earn top seed in state lacrosse tournament

Vikings win at Dover 18-2 to close out regular season 14-1

The Cape girls’ lacrosse team ran the roster at Dover May 14, winning 18-2 to close out the regular season 14-1. They were rewarded with the No. 1 seed in the upcoming DIAA state tournament, which kicks off Thursday, May 17.

The top four seeds, which include Cape, Saint Mark’s, Ursuline and Archmere, all receive first-round byes and will open play at home Saturday, May 19.

In the top bracket, Cape awaits the winner of St. Andrew’s at Padua, while Archmere will play the winner of Charter at Polytech. The winners of Saturday’s games will meet in the semifinals Tuesday, May 22.

In the bottom bracket, Saint Mark’s awaits the winner of Appoquinimink at Newark Charter, while Ursuline awaits the winner of Tower Hill at Dover. 

Ten players scored for Cape against Dover, including Lindsay Monigle and Mallory Jones with three goals each. Also scoring were Katie Frederick, Alia Marshall, Emily Monigle and Victoria Lockwood each with two goals and single goals from Mary Grace Cannon, Meredith Lockwood, Anna Stancofski and Annie Judge.

Assists came from Lindsay Monigle with three, Jones and Marshall with two each, and Victoria Lockwood and Talbot Buck with one apiece.

Goalies Vienna Iacona and Vivian Lynn combined for eight saves.

Grace Gast scored both of Dover’s goals, including her career 200th in the first half.

Britney Miller and Regan Torbert combined for six saves for the Senators.

The Cape junior varsity team closed out the season with an 18-1 win over Dover. Goal scorers were Riley Keen with four; Lindsay Rambo with three; Haley Craig, Alex Best, Katie Knarr and Kayla  Burkentine with two each; and Samantha Loper, Sky Dunmyer and Caroline Maull with one each.

Assists came from Best, Julie Heffernan and Keen, each with two, and a single assist from Maull and Knarr.

Vivian Lynn and Destiny Kusen split the game in goal.

Cape completed the JV season 12-0-1.
