Cape girls post crooked number in comeback win over Caesar Rodney

Vikings outscore Riders 18-7 in fourth quarter
January 19, 2018

The Cape girls’ basketball team upset Caesar Rodney at the Big House 39-35 Jan. 16, using a science fiction fourth quarter, an incomprehensible comeback that no one could reconstruct in their memories.

“We scored two points in the third quarter and 18 in the fourth, that’s how we won,” said coach Lauren Carra. “They pressured us in the third quarter, and we didn’t respond well, but we got it together in the fourth.”

The Vikings trailed the Riders 31-21 with 5:35 left to play, but in a flash – perhaps time stood still – the struggling Vikings hung a 17-4 crooked number on the Riders to lead 38-35 with 2:15 to play.

The coaches, officials and scorekeepers from both schools were all in synchronicity, but some stat-tracking fans felt Cape picked up a free three points during the comeback. The final score of 39-35 stood; the official signed the books and half the people went home happy.

The win leveled Cape at 5-5 on the season. The girls will travel to Sussex Central Friday, Jan. 19, to face the up-and-down Golden Knights of coach Ron Dukes. Central beat Cape earlier in the season 56-38, but the Golden Knights have lost their last three games and are sitting at 4-6 on the season.

Sydney Pedersen led Cape in scoring with 17 points, including three three-pointers, while Niya Mosley chipped in nine points.

The Riders were paced by freshman Jada McCullough and junior Kylie Lucas, each with nine points.

The girls of coach Bill Victory, now in his 28th season, dropped to 5-6 on the season.

Cape will face the Riders again at Caesar Rodney Friday, Feb. 2.
