Cape girls show off their skills in the Big Apple

January 26, 2018

Nine members of the Cape Henlopen girls’ track and field team traveled to the Big Apple Jan. 19-20 to take part in the annual New Balance Games Track & Field Championships at the Armory Track & Field Center on 168th Street. More than 5,000 athletes took part in the meet with a freshmen/sophomore format Friday night and a championship format on Saturday. Cape freshman Amaya Daisey wasted little time bursting onto the high school scene, as she jumped 15-feet-10½-inches on her second and third trips down the runway and captured the freshmen long jump championship among 23 jumpers. Freshman sister Aya jumped 15-feet-4½-inches in her first long jump competition this season to grab fourth overall.

Sophomore sprinter Timesha Cannon ran a trials personal best in the 55 meters of 7.69 to qualify for the exciting final for the second year in a row. In the final, Cannon finished fourth out of 45 girls overall in 7.76 seconds. Freshman Bre Kusen finished ninth of 128 girls in the 200 meters in 28.46, while freshman Taylor Johnson was also ninth of 75 girls in the rarely run 1,000 meters, as she ran an outstanding time of 3:22.42. Johnson set a personal best in the 800 meters of 2:43. Riley Klopp also competed in the 1,000 meters in 3:46.9 for 43rd, and Rose Minni competed in the long jump.

The best race of the night was the come-from-behind win by Cape’s 4-by-200-meter relay team of Aya Daisey (28.9), Amaya Daisey (27.4), Bre Kusen (27.6) and Timesha Cannon (27.7), which took over the lead on Kusen’s third leg, while Cannon held the field off on the anchor leg to the sound of the screaming crowd. The Vikings ran a season-best time of 1:51.73 for third overall out of 41 teams and were featured on the jumbo screen throughout the race with the announcer yelling, “Here comes Cape Henlopen to the finish.”

Cape finished off the night with the mile relay, where the same team finished fourth out of 13 teams in a time of 4:40.44.

On championship Saturday, Cape thrower Ce’yra Middleton finished fourth out of 107 throwers with her third meet in a row over 37 feet, as the junior tossed 37-feet-7¾-inches against a tough field of girls. Teammate Mackenzie Parker threw 29-feet-9¼-inches for 40th overall.

“Our girls had a real good meet and competed well, taking home 12 medals this year compared to four last year,” said assistant coach Gilbert Maull. “The competition the girls were exposed to and the whole big-meet experience is going to be so valuable to their track and field future. We hope they make the best of this opportunity.”
