Cape golf has chance for winning season
A May 3 forfeit by Woodbridge High School improved the Cape Henlopen golf team’s season record to 7-6.
Last year, two teams forfeited to Cape, and for the same reason as Woodbridge - they could not field a full team for the match.
The Vikings played on at Heritage Shores, however, using a different team lineup to take advantage of the playing opportunity.
Senior Barry Staebler had his best round of the year by far, posting a 44. Jack Ashby shot a 47 followed by Michael Bollig’s 50. Maddy McGreevey shot a 58 for the Vikings' fourth spot, one stroke ahead of fellow ninth-grader Abigail Bucklin. Another freshman, Anthony Koot, posted a 62.
Bad weather forced a postponement of the May 4 home match against Polytech to May 11.
The Vikings next faced Sussex Tech at home May 9, losing 193-188.
Foster Hayes of Tech won medalist honors with his 3-over 39 on Rehoboth’s front nine. Zehner finished three strokes behind Hayes, and Ashby posted a 46.
Staebler’s 51 and Bollig’s 54 made up the five-stroke difference between victory and defeat, showing how close some of these matches go.
Cape resumed its winning season record the next day with a 191-245 win over Lake Forest May 10 on the front nine at Rookery North.
Zehner won medalist with his 45, marred by a triple bogey on the seventh hole. As he now knows, going past the green on that hole is no picnic.
Ashby fired a 46 for second best among the Vikings, followed by Staebler’s 49.
Kyle Monigle completed the team scoring with his 51.
“I did my best so far,” he said. A bit of bunker trouble led to a post-round bit of instruction from coach Smarrelli.
With two matches remaining, the Vikings still have a chance for a winning season.
Whether that will also be enough for a team qualification for the state tournament is still an open question.
Bad weather hits DSGA Spring Classic
The continued rains of the past week or so took their toll on the Delaware State Golf Association’s Spring Classic, originally scheduled for May 5-6 at Rehoboth Beach Country Club and Kings Creek Country Club.
The popular tournament’s format was a 36-hole team Stableford, within flights, with 160 golfers participating.
The DSGA cancelled the second round May 6, as overnight rains overwhelmed the already-saturated golf courses.
The final results were taken from the first day’s round, where flights 1-4 played at Kings Creek and flights 5-8 played at Rehoboth Beach.
RBCC’s Ed Brown joined Ted Kaufman of Ocean City GC for second place in the first flight. Jim Doane and Nick DelCampo of Kings Creek took second in the eighth flight.
A Repeat Demo Day
Baywood Greens' Demo Day April 29 suffered from what assistant golf pro Pete McCaffrey described as horrible weather. The Millsboro public course is holding another demo day Friday, May 13, from 5 to 9 p.m.
Club manufacturers on hand will include Nike, Titleist, Callaway and Cleveland/Srixon.
Rookery Demo Day May 21
The Rookery’s annual Demo Day returns to the South course practice range Saturday, May 21, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Club makers to be on hand include Ping, Titleist, Taylor Made, Callaway, Mizuno and Cobra.

Zac Oakley qualifies for U.S. Open Sectional
Heritage Shores assistant golf pro Zac Oakley’s two-under par 70 May 9 at Worthington Manor Golf Club in Frederick, Md., qualified him for the next round in the U.S. Open qualifiers for this year’s challenge at Oakmont.
His next round takes place Monday, June 6, at Canoe Brook, in Summit, N.J.
Local club competition results
The Kings Creek Ladies 9 hole group played a wet, chilly Far Out game May 4. This format tosses from the gross and net scores anything the players did on the par 5s.
I’m not sure why you’d bother to play those holes at all if you knew their scores wouldn’t count, but it’s their game, not mine.
Kathy Nave won first place, with Gail Petren in second and Jeanne Drake in third.
The Kings Creek LGA 18 Holers played Cross Country for their weekly game May 10. In this format, players use their best nine scores of 18, by comparing how they did on holes 1 or 18, 2 or 17, 3 or 16, and so on.
Carol Simon, Anita Pettitt and Barbara Morales tied for first place, with Pettitt also winning the closest-to-the-pin contest.
The Sussex Pines Ladies 18 Hole group played a Member’s Choice game May 10, with Susan Shockley taking first place. Kim Brooks finished in second, while Carol Love and Hazel Pusey tied for third.
The group also played a team match play event with Jonathan’s Landing, and lost to the Kent County golfers in both gross (44-28) and net (42.5-29.5) categories.
