Cape hockey defeats IR

October 12, 2017

The Cape hockey team started out fast and never looked back as they shut out Indian River 5-0 Oct. 10 in Dagsboro.

Cape senior midfielder Annie Judge started off the scoring with a blast from the top left of the circle off a pass from junior defender Marcella Sabbagh.

“We just had to come out strong,” said Judge. “We knew the field was bumpy, and we don’t usually play on grass. We knew we had to get low, get the balls down and adapt to the field. We also knew they had a good goalie [Mya Parks], and we had to work around her and just crash because one player wasn’t going to beat her. We just needed to work together in the circle and not let it out and keep pushing.”

“I think we’re getting better every game,” said Cape coach Kate Austin. “We are burning in their mind that nothing is safe this year. With less teams getting into the tournament, we’re just trying to fight every day, especially with those early two losses. They are constantly reminded we have to get in the tournament; then it’s a new season, but we have to get there.”

Kaylie Truitt added the second goal of the game unassisted from the front of the Indians’ cage.

Alia Marshall ended the first half of scoring with a shot off a pass from Chloe Schaeffer, and the Vikings went into the halftime break up 3-0.

The second half started the same way as the first with the Vikings pounding the ball toward the Indian River goal.

Marshall got her second goal off the second assist by Marcella Sabbagh at the 28-minute mark.

Even though the final whistle sounded, the Vikings’ goal scoring didn’t stop, as the Vikings were awarded a penalty corner, and the rules state that time doesn’t end until the corner is taken. Sabbagh took a pass from Marshall and pounded the cage with the fifth and final tally of the contest.

Cape outshot the Indians 17-4. Goalies Marlee Geppert and Lori Ferguson stopped two and one Indians shots, respectively, for the Vikings, while Mya Parks made 13 saves for Indian River.

“Our goal right now is to win the north, and that’s what we keep pushing every day,” said Austin. “We’ve started to play well and we keep building on that.”

The Vikings were set to host Polytech Thursday, Oct. 12, before traveling to Milford for a match Tuesday, Oct. 17.
