Cape hockey looking fast, furious and unselfish

Cape to host another play day Saturday, Aug. 26
August 22, 2017

Cape field hockey was 13-2 last season, with both losses coming by a single goal to Maryland opponents Severna Park and South River. The Vikings ran their in-state victory streak to 100 before losing to Tower Hill in the quarterfinals 2-0. The streak of five straight state titles yielded the crown to Delmar, which beat Tower in the final for their first state championship.

Cape is reconfigured and reloaded for the 2017 fall season, and they appear faster and looser, with top-to-bottom depth sprinkled with several all-state-caliber players.

Cape mixed and matched lineups over six games of 25 minutes and looked good most to all of the time at its first play day of the preseason. Defense was the biggest question mark at the end of the day because the Vikings pretty much controlled the action - no scores kept but everyone knows what’s up - facing James Madison, South County, Caravel, Padua, Woodbridge and Saint Mark’s.

The junior varsity also played three games on the Bermuda fields.

Caravel gave Cape the best battle, while the Vikings rolled the Padua Pandas, who figure to be in the mix when the state tournament rolls around.

Caravel was 14-1 last season, losing 2-1 to Polytech in the second round of the state tournament, while Padua was 15-0, then lost in the semifinals of the state tournament to Tower Hill 4-0.

Cape will host a nine-team play day Saturday, Aug. 26, featuring Chesapeake, Delmar, Padua, Pocomoke, South River, Tower Hill, Sussex Tech and Wootton. Action begins at 8 a.m.

The schedule will be posted later in the week.
