Cape hockey overwhelms Good Counsel 2-1

Dominating performance not decisive until final seconds
September 25, 2017

The magical mystery tour of the 2017 Cape field hockey team continued Sept. 23 with a dominating performance over visiting Our Lady of Good Counsel of Maryland.

The final score of 2-1 doesn’t equate with the word “domination,” but the stats were skewed totally toward Cape, as the Vikings held a 33-1 advantage in shots on goal and a 25-1 advantage in corners.

Cape led 1-0 at halftime on a goal from Kaylie Truitt, who cleaned up a rebounded shot by Annie Judge. A total of 15 first-half corners were inserted and close to none of those setups required the goalie to make a play.

The second half was much the same script. Cam Smith scored at 20:16 on an assist from Alia Marshall to give Cape a “catastrophe cushion,” but at 17:05, Good Counsel’s Sydney Sweeney scored to make it a one-goal game, and the tension returned to the pitch.

Good Counsel had a corner in the final minute, but the defense fronting backup goalie Marlee Geppert was awarded the ball (who knows why) and was able to run out the clock.

Cape (2-2) will play at Lake Forest (3-1) Tuesday, Sept. 26, then host Seaford Thursday, Sept. 28, and Padua Saturday, Sept. 30.

Sheahan Collins had nine saves for the Falcons, who dropped to 6-3 on the season.

Coach Kate Austin: “The trouble we have with finishing comes from lack of discipline, and we will improve as we get more experience under our belts. Our biggest focus now is improving team defense and movement as a unit on offense. Lake on grass will be a challenge – it is every time we go up there.”
