February 20, 2018

Cape placed three wrestlers in the finals at the Henlopen Conference wrestling tournament Feb. 17 at Milford High School. And with three second-place finishers, the Vikings finished sixth in the tournament.

Billy Ott (220) came in second to Milford’s Anthony Diaz in an ultimate tiebreaker; Andre Currie (138) placed second to Caesar Rodney’s Jackson Dean, and Chris Handlin (170) fell to Smyrna’s Dakota Kerr with a 3-1 decision.

“I’m real pleased with how we placed in the tournament,” said Cape coach Chris Mattioni. “We have nine wrestlers going to states and they are all underclassmen. I think it’s real positive moving forward.”

Along with the second-pace finishers, Anthony Caruso placed third at 126; Jonah Robertson and Jackson Handlin took fourth at 285 and 145, respectively; Finbar Rishko took fifth at 132; Eduardo Saez placed sixth at 182; and Roy Jones placed eighth at 160.

Cape wrestlers reached milestones during the event, as Caruso garnered his 100th career win and Chris Handlin tied with Matt Graviet for the most pins in school history.

Smyrna took the overall tournament title with six weight-class winners and seven total wrestlers in the finals. Following the Eagles were Caesar Rodney, Dover, Sussex Central and Milford.

Earning a spot in the state tournament this weekend are Ott, No. 3 seed; Caruso, No. 3 seed; Currie, No. 4 seed; Chris Handlin, No. 5 seed; Jackson Handlin, No. 7 seed; Saez, No. 7 seed; Robertson, No. 8 seed; Rishko, No. 9 seed; and Jones, No. 16 seed.

The DIAA State Championships will begin Friday, Feb. 23, at Cape Henlopen High School.
