The Cape Henlopen girls’ soccer team went into the May 16 Henlopen Conference matchup with Dover sitting on the bubble with a glimmer of hope that they would make the DIAA State Tournament with a record of 8-6, but the bubble burst even though they defeated the Senators 1-0. They finish their 2017 season with a 9-6 record, but didn’t get into the tournament draw.
“We played very well against Dover,” said Cape coach Patrick Kilby. “We created a lot of chances, but we just didn’t finish them.”
The only score came from sophomore Brooke Hollingsworth at the 16-minute mark off a pass from Claire Rasin.
The Vikings coach was pleased with the performance of his goalkeeper, who finished the game with four saves.
“Lucy [Siranides] recorded her fifth shutout of the season,” he said. “She had a great game.”
Cape outshot the Senators 15-4 with Dover keeper Brittney Rosello stopping 14 Vikings shots.
“Overall, the season went very well for us,” said Kilby. “It was a very positive experience for all involved. I feel that there has been tremendous growth over the past year, and we look forward to the start of next season.”
