Cape soccer downs Holly Grove Christian 5-1

Zack Gelof has third hat trick of season
September 19, 2017

Cape senior Zack Gelof scored his third hat trick in as many games to lead Cape to a 5-1 win over visiting Holly Grove Christian School Sept. 16 at Legends Stadium. Gelof has scored 11 goals in the first four games of the season.

Dane Palmer started off the scoring when he placed the ball into the right lower corner off a centering pass from Chris Gonzalez. Vikings captain Uly Slagle struck next with a helper from Troy Humphries and Cape went into halftime up 2-0.

The second half was the Gelof show, as he headed in three goals off three consecutive corner kicks by Slagle.

Cape outshot the Eagles 20-4 and held a 7-2 edge in corner kicks. Jake Gelof and Alan Marin-Quiroz each had two stops in the cage.

Cape will travel to Smyrna Thursday, Sept. 21, for a Henlopen Conference matchup with the Eagles.

Corner kicks - Cape soccer is 4-0 over the first four games of the season, having outscored opponents 16-3 with a 71-24 composite number for shots on goal. Zack Gelof makes a living in headers off throw-ins and corner kicks, but he also, in a four-goal performance against Dover, has one from long range and another one from a sharp angle. “I never had a guy score four with that much time left of the clock,” said assistant Gary Montalto. “Zack is, first of all, unselfish; he never goes hunting for goals.”

“I know what’s out there beyond the next game, but it’s not something the team thinks about,” said coach Patrick Kilby.

Cape started the 2015 season 7-0.
