Cape soccer falls to Indians 4-2

April 25, 2018

The Cape Henlopen soccer game with Indian River was moved up to avoid bad weather, but after a scoreless first half, the goals rained down. In the end, the Indians claimed a 4-2 victory over the Lady Vikings.

Brooke Hollingsworth scored at the 43-minute mark off a pass from Hannah Bieler, and she struck again four minutes later off an assist from Madi Swontek. They were the only tallies by the Vikings’ squad.

Indian River’s Anastasia Diakos scored at 48:20 off a pass from Isabella Binko. Binko took her turn to score the next goal from Diakos at 53:28. A bad bounce resulted in an own goal by Cape at 68:00, and Binko finished the scoring at 72:47 off a pass from Avery Congleton.

“It was the best 55 minutes of soccer we’ve played all season,” said Cape coach Patrick Kilby. “For some reason, the wheels fell off and we were not able to close out the match.”

The Indians outshot the Vikings 15-5. Cape keeper Lucy Siranides made nine saves, while Indian River’s Fabrea McCray saved three shots.

“We need to find that edge that allows us to close out good teams,” said Kilby. “This Cape team is a very strong team and has the ability to go very far, but we need to make sure that when we have the lead on a team such as Indian River that we hold on and not allow them back into the match.”

The Vikings travel to Caesar Rodney Thursday, April 26, to face the 7-1 Riders.
