Cape soccer hosts play day tune-up

Vikings open next week against Sussex Academy
September 5, 2017

The Cape soccer team had its final tune-up before the regular season as they hosted St. Michaels (Md.), Tower Hill and Sussex Central in a play day scrimmage Sept. 1 at the Cape athletic complex. The home squad finished 2-0-1 on the day of action.

The Vikings started off slow, going down 1-0 to the Golden Knights before Zack Gelof got behind the defense and powered home a boot to tie the scrimmage at 1-1. Senior wing Gerardo Haro-Simental half-volleyed the second score for Cape. Uly Slagle gave the Vikings a 3-1 lead, but Central came back to cut the deficit to 3-2 before the game ended.

In the second game, the Vikings tied the Hillers 0-0. Tower Hill finished the 2016 campaign with a 13-2 record and won the DIAA Division II state championship 4-2 over Indian River.

The final scrimmage of the day found the Vikings taking no mercy on St. Michaels 5-0. Juan Larez-Carrillo and Gelof scored twice for the Vikings, while Slagle added one.

“The day went well,” said Cape coach Patrick Kilby. “We have a few things that we need to work as we prepare for our season opener versus Sussex Academy.”

Kilby was pleased with the play of his squad and in particular Larez-Carillo.

”Juan showed very well today as he proved to be very versatile,” said Kilby. “Bradley Seneus also proved to be a valuable piece to our central midfield.”

The Vikings will open their regular season with a home game with Sussex Academy Friday, Sept. 8, at Legends Stadium.

“Overall, I believe we are prepared for the season,” Kilby said. “We have great depth, and the team seems to be focused.”
