Cape soccer hosts play day

August 25, 2016

Fifteen teams took to the turf of Legends Stadium and Champions Stadium Aug. 22 for a daylong play day of scrimmages to prepare the squads for their season openers. Cape played two full 40-minute scrimmages against powerful Mt. Saint Joe’s of Maryland, then later battled Lakeland, N.J.

Sussex Tech was also part of the scrimmage, playing Mt. Saint Joe’s in the late afternoon before closing out the evening against Sts. Peter and Paul of Maryland.

“The preseason has been good,” said veteran Ravens coach Carlos Villa. “We played well in the Kirkwood play day [Aug. 20], and today the competition is really good, so we’re just trying to get experience and see how we work together.”

Cape coach Patrick Kilby is still evaluating players, looking for those who can go hard for an entire game. “We look for Aidan Spoor, Zack Gelof, Luke Mulchay, Brent Hochrein, Alec Hochrein (when he is healthy), and Ulysis Slagle to lead the way in regard to playing 80 minutes a match. We have a lot of inexperience in regard to varsity soccer minutes, so these young men will have to lead the way for us. We are trying to find the pieces that can surround them and help our system of play become more effective.”

Cape will host a Saturday, Aug. 27 scrimmage, beginning at 3 p.m. versus Middletown and St. Elizabeth.
