Cape soccer keeps the Eagles’ offense caged

Vikings remain undefeated at 5-0 with win
September 26, 2017

Cape sophomore Christopher Gonzalez and senior Zack Gelof each hit the twine Sept. 21 to beat Smyrna 2-0 to give the Vikings their fifth straight victory; they remain undefeated at 5-0.

The Vikings have outscored opponents 18-3 in the first five games of the season.

Gonzalez started the scoring at the 23-minute mark when he took a crossing pass from Aidan Spoor and put it past Smyrna goalkeeper Abdul Musa for his second goal of the season.

At the 51-minute mark, Gelof was open going in on goal when a Smyrna defender pulled him down from behind, resulting in a penalty kick. He didn’t disappoint, as he powered a low shot to the left lower corner for his 13th goal.

“It was one of the better teams Smyrna has had in the last four years,” said Cape coach Patrick Kilby. “They were organized, big and physical like us. We were just a better possession team, and it came through for us in the end.”

Cape was awarded eight corner kicks, while Smyrna took two.

The Vikings took 13 shots on goal to the Eagles’ eight. Jake Gelof made eight saves in the Vikings’ cage.

“Jake has had two big conference shutouts for us,” Kilby said. “He has done a great job.”

The Vikings junior varsity squad defeated Smyrna 2-0.

Cape will host Seaford Tuesday, Sept. 26, at 6:30 p.m.
