Cape soccer shoots down Mallards 3-1

Vikings welcome state champs IR Sept. 27
September 27, 2016

The Vikings moved to 4-2-1 on the season Sept. 24, as junior Zack Gelof scored two goals and added an assist, and Eric Velasquez-Santizo tallied an insurance goal in the Vikings’ 3-1 win over Worcester Prep.

Gelof’s first score came off an assist from Troy Humphries at the four-minute mark. His second goal was on a penalty kick at 28 minutes into the contest. Velasquez-Santizo’s tally came at the 64-minute mark. Worcester’s lone goal was scored unassisted by Tate Shockley.

Teams were even on shots at nine, with Vikings freshman keeper Alan Marin-Quiroz, subbing for the injured Brent Hochrein, making eight saves, and Mallards goalie Cooper Richins stopping seven.

“We controlled most of the game,” said Cape coach Patrick Kilby. “The team played well. Two of our goals came off of flow of play rather than set pieces. I’m pleased with that.”

Cape fell to Polytech 1-0 in overtime Sept. 22, when the Vikings lost senior goalkeeper Brent Hochrein to a wrist injury. He will be out four to six weeks.

Polytech scored on a penalty kick after the Vikings were called for a hand ball in the box with two minutes left in the second overtime.

“We played a tough conference match,” said Kilby. “It was a hard-fought game by both teams. It’s a shame it had to come down to a call like that.”

Cape will host 2015 Division II state champion Indian River Tuesday, Sept. 27, for a matchup of father/son between Cape coach Patrick Kilby and his father Indians coach Steve Kilby.
