Cape soccer shuts out Woodbridge 4-0 for fourth victory

Underclassmen give Lady Vikings a lift
April 13, 2017

Cape sophomore Brooke Hollingsworth scored two goals and assisted on another to lead the Vikings to their fourth win of the season 4-0 over the Raiders April 11 at Legends Stadium.

Junior Hannah Bieler started off the scoring at the 10-minute mark off a nice centering pass from Hollingsworth. Hollingsworth then scored two at the 43- and 64-minute marks off assists from Lindsay Swontek and Sydney Zych, respectively. Junior Brayden Fannin finished the scoring barrage with a penalty kick with seven minutes left in the contest.

“We took advantage of our high percentage shots,” said Cape coach Patrick Kilby.

The Lady Vikings outshot the Blue Raiders 15-2.

Kilby gave props to his defense for its first shutout of the season.

“Leah Marsh, Darby Klopp, Colleen Donohoe and Claire Rasin have been doing a fantastic job on the defensive end and really growing in their positions,” he said. “Lucy Siranides is doing great in the cage.”

The loss to Woodbridge in 2016 kept the Vikings out of the DIAA state tournament, and the win was extra satisfying to the Vikings’ head coach.

“It was big to beat this team because they helped to end our playoff hopes last season,” he said.

Cape fell 3-2 in double overtime to Polytech April 7 in Woodside.

“They took advantage of our mental lapses in the game,” said Kilby. “That led to their goals.”

Hollingsworth scored Cape’s goals with assists from Bieler and Fannin. Cape outshot the Panthers 17-11. Freshman goalkeeper Siranides made eight saves in the game.

Cape was set to host Sussex Tech Thursday, April 13.
