Cape soccer slips by Polytech 1-0

Vikings move to 11-1
October 17, 2017

The Cape soccer team pounded 32 shots on the Polytech goal, but only one slipped by Panthers goalkeeper Ryan Hesterman to give the Vikings a 1-0 victory and move them to 11-1 on the season.

“It was a little frustrating because they wouldn’t step out and play us,” said Cape coach Patrick Kilby of the Panthers’ tactic of holding 10 players behind the ball. “They were well organized. They were in sort of successful in stopping our attack, but we won the game.”

Cape’s Uly Slagle scored at the 43-minute mark off a pass by Zack Gelof.

Hesterman stopped 25 Vikings shots in the game, while Cape’s Jake Gelof made five saves.

The Vikings host Caesar Rodney Tuesday, Oct. 17, at Legends Stadium. If Cape wins or ties the Riders, the Vikings win the Northern Division. If Caesar Rodney wins the game, they win the North. Game time is 6:30 p.m.
