Cape soccer team runs the Breast Fest 5K in Dewey Beach

August 25, 2016

The Cape soccer team along with coach Pat Kilby and some supportive parents were just part of the pink cloud of 284 runners at the Breast Fest 5K Aug. 20. The weather was 76 degrees for the  8 a.m. start, but the discomfort index in the final stretch was clammy and uncomfortable.

The fast-paced race was won by Paul Balmer, 26, of Washington, D.C., in a time of 16:41. He was followed by Ryan Lockett in 17:33, Ayden Gann in 18:02, Martin Rodriguez in 18:17 and Anthony Romano in 18:21.

The women’s race was won by Jennifer Brill, 26, of Washington, D.C., in 19:10 (Balmer and Brill sounds like D.C. law group). She was followed by Kristina Wilcox in 20:23, Carly Jornlin in 21:11, Rachel Collins in 21:21 and Tara Cavaselis in 21:32.

Mike Sewell, 47, was the male masters winner in 18:59, while Jenny Munro was female masters champion in 21:33.

The top 26 runners finished under 7-minute-per-mile pace, while 100 ran the race at sub-10 pace. And that is the nature of the sport of road running – it is more a race against oneself versus the athletes who sandwich you over a hot race.

Sara Kilby, 10, the coach’s daughter, ran her first 5K in 45:10.

Local notables included Amanda Ritter in 24:24, Lucy Wilkinson in 27:46, Carla Yngve in 31:05, Amanda Kilby in 47:41, Kelly Gelof in 29:25, Joann Szczepkowski in 26:35, Aidan Spoor in 19:56, Alan Marin in 20:24, Richard Carey in 21:17, Ed Nouhra in 21:21, Priyen Patel in 20:34, Bryan Mack in 20:11, Isaiah Brisco in 23:28, John Lehne in 23:45, Patrick Kilby in 33:09, Robert Fitzgerald in 22:18, James Klingel in 33:06 and Bill McArthur in 30:05.

The next local Races2Run events are the Sunday, Sept. 4 Summer’s End 5K followed by the Monday, Sept. 5 Rylie’s Dog Days of Summer 5K in Lewes.
