Cape tennis shows well in Henlopen Conference Tournament

Cape girls’ tennis sends three to semis

The Cape tennis squad was set to send back three girls’ positions and the boys’ second doubles team to the Henlopen Conference Tournament semifinals Monday, May 15, at Sea Colony. Complete results were not available by press time.

Representing the girls’ team was first singles Maryann Tietbohl, who defeated her Smyrna opponent 6-1, 6-2 in the second round. She had a bye in the first round. She was to play Caesar Rodney’s Halle Parker at 9:30. The first doubles team of Amanda Sponaugle and Melanie McCloy were to face Dover’s Hayley Scheir and Kaitlin Canalicho. They defeated their Seaford opponents 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 in the second round. The second doubles team of Anna Harrington and Taylor Smith was set to play Dover’s Jing Lin and Erin Biddle. They defeated Indian River 6-2, 6-0 in the second round.

The lone boys’ squad members left were the second doubles team of Ben Conrad and Henry Clampitt, who won two three-set matches to advance to the semis. They were scheduled to play Smyrna’s Maxwell Berman and David Fu in the semis.

The Cape girls’ team is tied with Smyrna for third place overall with seven points going into the semis.

Cape girls coach Laurie Carter was voted Henlopen Conference Coach of the Year.
