Cape volleyball close, but no win at Smyrna

September 19, 2017

The Cape volleyball team came on strong in the second and third sets of its match against Smyrna Sept. 14, but it just wasn’t enough, as the Vikings fell to a tough Eagles squad 25-12, 25-23 and 25-22 to take their second loss of the season.

Sophia Spinelli and Logan Shuttleworth led the Vikings with 13 kills and 21 assists, respectively. Emily Lamb had 10 digs for Cape.

“Again, even in defeat, I'm extremely happy with what our team is showing,” said coach Tyler Coupe. “We started off in a weird funk, unable to really get anything going. We made a few small lineup changes for sets 2 and 3, and they proved to be very helpful. Smyrna is one of the toughest teams on our schedule and is arguably the best team in our conference. They remained poised and focused throughout the match.

“Once we were able to get comfortable, I thought we played a really strong match. We were creative offensively, something we haven't been in past matches. Our serve receive was more consistent, which allowed us to run more in system offensive plays. I would still like to see a little more focus on establishing our middles early, but with such a young team, I'm still happy with our effort to do so. It's a match to build upon, which we need to as we gear up for a strong IR team that is certainly coming into our gym hungry having just beat CR.”

Madison Drummond led the Eagles with 37 assists, while Erin Smallwood served 12 aces. Morgan Holman bumped 14 digs for the Eagles. They will host Tower Hill Tuesday, Sept. 19.

The Cape junior varsity lost to Smyrna 2-0, going 25-19 and 25-23 in the match.
