Cape volleyball hosts Play Day at the Beach

16 teams prepare for regular season
August 31, 2016

Sixteen teams heated up the air-conditioned Cape Henlopen gymnasium Aug. 27 for the annual Cape Play Day at the Beach. The daylong scrimmage featured the top teams in the state in a 20-minute, high-pressure game format. Teams included were 2016 state champs Delaware Military Academy, Caesar Rodney, Archmere, Caravel, Conrad, Delmarva Christian, Polytech, Sussex Tech, Smyrna, Sanford, St. Elizabeth, Sussex Academy, Tatnall, Friends and host Cape Henlopen.

“I thought our play day went really well this year,” said Cape coach Tyler Coupe. “We had some of the top teams in the state down and the past two state champions in DMA and Archmere.”

The second-year coach and his staff are sorting out the new look on this season’s squad.

“We're still trying to figure out our identity,” he said. “We ran several different lineups throughout the day, and as a coaching staff we are trying to find out which combination puts our team in the best position. I saw some things that we already improved on from last week’s play day, but I still saw a lot of things we need to do better in our gym the next two weeks before our first match. Overall, it was a great day to show off Cape and our campus as well as our volleyball team.”

The Vikings play host to Delmarva Christian Friday, Sept. 9.
