Cape volleyball puts the roof on SAS 3-0

Cape moves to 8-4
October 19, 2017

Cape senior setter Logan Shuttleworth had a career game to lead the Lady Vikings to a 25-16, 25-18 and 25-10 victory over Sussex Academy Oct. 17 in Georgetown.

Shuttleworth picked up 25 assists and served seven aces while bumping eight digs and knocking down four kills.

Senior hitter Sophia Spinelli continued to be a force at the net, slamming 10 kills and blocking six Seahawks kill attempts. Freshman Emily Lamb and junior Alex Chiartas bumped 13 and eight digs, respectively. Freshman Katie Knarr picked up 11 digs and knocked down six kills.

“I’m really happy with how our team performed today,” said Cape coach Tyler Coupe. “Our goal was to come in and force them out of system with our serves, and I think we did that exceptionally well. I thought Katie Knarr and Maddy Holt played a great game for us offensively. They were smart and creative in their attacks that paced us for the entire match. We can be a little crisper in our free-ball offense, but that's something we're continuing to work on.”

“We brought all aspects of our game,” said Shuttleworth. “It’s exciting. Our flow as a team was better. We served, returned serve, hit, bumped, set and covered really well.”

The Vikings are still in the hunt for a spot in the DIAA state tournament at 8-4.

“We've got to get back in the gym for a tough match versus an improving Dover team and then a top 10 team in Conrad on Friday,” Coupe said.

The loss knocked the Seahawks to 9-2 on the season, while Cape has won eight matches in a row.

The 9-2 Cape junior varsity took a 25-13 and 25-17 victory over the previously undefeated JV Seahawks, moving them to 9-1.

Following the matches with Dover and Conrad, the Vikings will close out their season with Caesar Rodney Tuesday, Oct. 24, at home.
