Cape volleyball wins shootout with Polytech

Vikings look to matchup with the Spartans
September 26, 2016

It was like the shootout at the OK Polytech gym, and when the final shot was made, the Cape volleyball squad had used a powerful and tenacious front line to down the Panthers 27-25, 25-17 and 25-23 for a 3-0 win over a tough Polytech team.

Seniors Abby E’Nama and Taylor Collier led the way for the Vikings with six and five kills, respectively.

“Abby had some thunderous hits,” said Cape coach Tyler Coupe. “Taylor had some well-placed aggressive hits.”

Sophie Spinelli and Cailey Thornburg had a consistent all-around game.

“Sophie played well, and Cailey really came alive with her control in that third set. And that’s what I love to see,” said Coupe.

Logan Shuttleworth fired in seven aces and loaded up 18 assists for Cape.

“Logan spread the ball around beautifully,” said Coupe.

Teagan VanBrunt and Maddie Holt each had eight digs in the victory.

“We definitely served better in the first and third games,” Coupe said. “The second game we missed way too many. Polytech is a strong, strong team, and you have to be aggressive from behind the service line. You can’t give them many opportunities or they will make you pay. I was happy with our composure. I thought at the net again we were really physical.”

Coupe was also happy with the team play of his hitters, having a total of 20 kills in the match.

“We didn’t have one heavy hitter, we were much more balanced,” Coupe said. “That gives us an advantage and it keeps the other team on their heels. I love, love, love that.”

“I think we came out really aggressive on the offensive side,” said senior hitter E’Nama. “We made up for our missed serves with our hustle and it turned out good for us.”

Collier, a senior captain, was quick to praise her back line for their play.

“In the beginning of the season, it was difficult to use all of our front-line players, but our back row and our libero have really progressed,” she said. “Their passes are really getting to Logan nicely, and she is able to set everybody, and it’s helping out our offensive line play.”

In junior varsity action, the Vikings defeated the JV Panthers 2-1 to improve to 2-1.

The Cape varsity moves to 2-1 on the season. They will welcome the Spartans of Lake Forest Tuesday, Sept. 27, for an important Henlopen Conference matchup.
