February 20, 2017

The Cape Henlopen wrestling team placed third in the Henlopen Conference Championship behind Smyrna and Sussex Central Feb. 18 in Georgetown.

Cape’s first-seeded Zack Flores took first place with a win over Milford’s Bryan Wynes in the 285-pound class. Flores defeated Sussex Tech’s Jamie Schirmer in the semis. Schirmer had previously defeated Flores 3-2 Feb. 1. Cape’s Cory Lawson defeated Central’s Brandon Bautista in the final of the 160-pound bracket after Bautista beat him Feb. 14 in the deciding match of the state dual-meet tournament semifinal.

Cape’s Vincent Diego lost an overtime match in the final to Anthony Fisher of Dover. Diego had defeated Fisher 4-2 Jan. 25 in the Vikings’ 42-24 win over the Senators.

"I thought we wrestled really well Friday night," said Cape coach Chris Mattioni. "We put nine wrestlers into the semis. We didn't perform up to our potential in the semis, but five guys took third place. It showed our character that they refocused and did great in the wrestlebacks.”

Cape qualified 10 wrestlers for the state tournament, which is set to begin Friday, Feb. 24, at Dover High School.

Cape’s Anthony Caruso placed fourth at 120, freshman Andre Curie placed seventh at 126 and Max Norquest took third-place honors at 132. Senior Zeke Bean took third at 145, Dante Jacquet placed third at 152, Chris Handlin took third at 170, Brock Maloomian took sixth at 195 and Billy Ott placed third at 220.

Sussex Central coach Phil Shultie took the 2017 Coach of the Year honors. Jackson Dean of Caesar Rodney was named the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler, as he beat defending state champion Greg Baum of Smyrna.
